Questions
How is this different from the dictation built into macOS?
Murmurly is push-to-talk: hold a key you choose, in any app, and let go. It removes filler words and adds punctuation before the text lands, learns the names it mishears, expands short phrases into full text, keeps a local history so you can recover a dictation you pasted over, and can rewrite a selection when you tell it what to change. The built-in dictation does none of that, and it isn't a key you hold.
Does my audio leave my Mac?
No. Transcription runs on your Mac with Apple's speech recognizer, and the recording is discarded the moment it's transcribed. Cleanup runs on your Mac too, with Apple Intelligence.
Which apps does it work in?
Any app that accepts typed text: Mail, Slack, Notes, browsers, terminals, code editors, chat windows. Murmurly types where your cursor is; it doesn't integrate with apps one by one, so there's nothing to set up per app.
Which languages and accents?
English is tuned for Indian English by default, which also handles Hinglish, and you can switch to US, UK or Australian English or to Hindi in Settings. Picking the right one matters more than you'd think: a US-English recognizer measurably mishears other accents.
Can I change the shortcut?
Yes. Pick one of the presets or record any chord you like in Settings. Double-tap it to keep recording hands-free, and tap once to stop.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Recognition, cleanup, your dictionary and snippets all run on your Mac. You sign in once; after that nothing about the app needs a connection.
Why do I need to sign in?
So the people making Murmurly can see how many people use it and which parts. What's sent after sign-in is counts, such as how many dictations and words, never any text. Signing in is the only thing that needs the internet.
Is it free?
Yes. There's no paid tier.
What permissions does it ask for?
Microphone, to hear you. Speech recognition, to transcribe on-device. Accessibility, to type at your cursor in other apps. Without the last one, every dictation still lands on your clipboard.
Do I need Apple Intelligence?
Only for on-device cleanup. Dictation itself works on any Mac running macOS 14 or later; without Apple Intelligence the text arrives as you spoke it, punctuation and all.
Can I use my own AI model?
You can point cleanup or rewrite at Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Groq or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint with your own key. It's off by default, and the app tells you plainly that the text of each dictation is sent to that provider when it's on.
What does "rewrite a selection" mean?
Select text anywhere, hold the rewrite key, and say what to change: "make this shorter", "more formal", "fix the grammar". The selection is replaced in place. Your voice is the instruction; the selection is what gets rewritten.
Where is my history kept, and can I turn it off?
On your Mac, in a file only your user can read. It's capped, searchable, exportable, and you can set it to delete after 7, 30 or 90 days, or switch it off entirely, which deletes the file.
How do updates work?
Murmurly checks for a new version about once a day and tells you. It never installs one by itself; you say yes first. The check can be switched off in Settings.
Can I delete my account?
Yes, from Settings. It removes your account and everything stored under it on the server. Nothing on your Mac is touched.
Which Macs?
macOS 14 Sonoma or later, Apple silicon or Intel. On-device cleanup needs Apple Intelligence; see above.
Is there an iPhone version?
Not yet.
